Vehicle Financing During or After a Consumer Proposal in BC

Vehicle Financing During or After a Consumer Proposal in BC

Being in a consumer proposal does not necessarily mean you have to wait until it’s finished before financing a vehicle.

At Pacific Nations Auto Sales & Finance, we’ve helped customers obtain vehicle financing while they were actively in a consumer proposal, as well as after completing one.

Every customer’s situation is different, and approval is never guaranteed. Some lenders or individual approval situations may require you to be discharged from your proposal first.

But that isn’t always the case.

We’ve also seen many customers receive vehicle financing approvals while their consumer proposal was still active, particularly when they had remained up to date with their required payments and could provide the necessary confirmation from their trustee.

If you’re currently in a consumer proposal and need a vehicle, the most important thing is not to assume you can’t qualify before you’ve explored your options.

Currently in a Consumer Proposal?

You don’t necessarily have to wait until your proposal is finished to explore vehicle financing.

Can I Get a Car Loan While I’m Still in a Consumer Proposal?

Yes, it may be possible.

This is one of the most common misconceptions we encounter when working with customers who have entered a consumer proposal.

Some people believe they automatically have to finish the entire proposal and receive their discharge before a lender will consider them for vehicle financing.

In our experience arranging automotive financing, that isn’t universally true.

Some lenders or approval situations may require discharge. However, Pacific Nations has also helped customers obtain vehicle financing while they were still actively making payments on their consumer proposal.

What matters is the overall application and whether we can find a lender willing to approve the transaction under circumstances that make sense for both the customer and the lender.

Your Credit Since Starting the Proposal Matters

One of the biggest things we’ve observed is that lenders aren’t only looking at what happened before your consumer proposal.

What you’ve done since entering the proposal can matter too.

If you’re required to make payments as part of your consumer proposal, keeping those payments current can be important when seeking new vehicle financing.

We’ve also found that avoiding new derogatory credit after entering the proposal can be important.

There is a meaningful difference between someone who experienced financial difficulty, entered a formal process to deal with it and has stayed on top of their obligations since, and someone who continues accumulating new unpaid or delinquent obligations afterward.

That’s why one of the most practical things you can do while going through a consumer proposal is simple:

Keep your required payments current and do your best to maintain a clean payment history going forward.

You May Need Information From Your Trustee

When applying for vehicle financing during an active consumer proposal, a lender may require documentation relating to the proposal.

Depending on the lender and your individual circumstances, this can include confirmation from your Licensed Insolvency Trustee regarding the status of your proposal and your payments.

If documentation is required, our finance team can explain what the lender is requesting so you know what you’ll need to obtain.

Do I Have to Be Discharged From My Consumer Proposal First?

Not necessarily.

We’ve seen both situations.

There are circumstances where a lender may require a consumer to have completed or been discharged from their proposal before approving new vehicle financing.

We’ve also successfully worked with customers who were approved while their consumer proposal was still active.

That’s one reason it’s difficult to give a universal answer without reviewing the actual application.

A lender’s decision can depend on the customer’s overall financial situation, the lender’s own approval criteria and the structure of the vehicle transaction.

What Can Affect a Vehicle Financing Approval?

There isn’t one single factor that determines whether someone in a consumer proposal will qualify for a vehicle loan.

When our finance team submits an application, lenders may consider a combination of information such as:

  • Your current income
  • Employment and income stability
  • Your existing financial obligations
  • The status of your consumer proposal
  • Your payment history since entering the proposal
  • Any new derogatory credit
  • The vehicle being financed
  • The amount being financed
  • A trade-in, if applicable
  • A down payment, if applicable
  • The individual lender’s approval criteria

Not every lender evaluates an application in exactly the same way.

That’s where working with multiple automotive lenders can be valuable.

Pacific Nations Works With More Than Twelve Automotive Lenders

Pacific Nations works with more than twelve automotive lenders, including TD Auto Finance, RBC and CIBC.

Our finance team works with customers across a wide range of credit situations, from established prime credit to customers rebuilding after significant financial challenges.

Rather than assuming the answer based solely on the words “consumer proposal,” our job is to understand your current situation and determine what financing options may actually be available.

Most financing approvals can be completed the same day, although applications involving additional documentation or trustee information may take longer.

Don’t Assume the Answer Is No

If you’re in a consumer proposal and need a reliable vehicle, let our finance team look at your actual situation before deciding that you can’t qualify.

What If I’ve Already Completed My Consumer Proposal?

If you’ve completed your consumer proposal, you can still speak with our finance team about vehicle financing.

Your previous credit history doesn’t disappear simply because the proposal has been completed, but completing the proposal is an important change in your financial circumstances that can be considered as part of a new application.

We’ll work with the information available at the time you apply and explore financing options based on your current situation.

What If I’m in Bankruptcy Instead?

Pacific Nations has also helped customers obtain vehicle financing while in bankruptcy and after bankruptcy.

As with a consumer proposal, every situation is different. Some approval scenarios may require discharge, while we’ve also seen customers receive approvals during an active bankruptcy when their required obligations were current and the necessary trustee documentation could be provided.

Do I Need Perfect Credit After Starting My Consumer Proposal?

No one can change the credit history that led to a consumer proposal.

What you can control is what happens next.

From what we’ve seen working with automotive lenders, keeping required payments current and avoiding new derogatory credit after entering the proposal can be important.

That doesn’t guarantee an approval, but it can give a lender a more current picture of how you’ve managed your financial obligations since the proposal began.

Can I Shop for a Vehicle Before I Know What I’m Approved For?

Absolutely.

However, customers in a consumer proposal may find it helpful to explore financing earlier in the shopping process.

A pre-approval can give our finance and sales teams a better understanding of the lender parameters we’re working with.

Instead of showing you vehicles and estimating payments using an assumed interest rate, we can help identify vehicles that make sense based on both your needs and the financing options actually available to you.

Getting pre-approved first is always optional.

Can I Complete the Process From Home?

Yes.

Pacific Nations works with customers throughout British Columbia, and much of the financing and vehicle-shopping process can be completed remotely.

You can submit your financing application electronically, provide required documents through secure portal links, review vehicle information from home and even complete a remote trade appraisal.

Once you’ve found the right vehicle, we can provide photographs, vehicle history information, available mechanical inspection information and a live video walkaround of the actual vehicle.

Do I have to finish my consumer proposal before financing a vehicle?

Not always. We’ve seen customers approved both during and after a consumer proposal. Whether financing is available before discharge depends on the customer’s individual circumstances and the lender reviewing the application.

Does being current on my consumer proposal payments matter?

In our experience, keeping required proposal payments current can be important when lenders evaluate an application. Lenders may request confirmation regarding the status of the proposal and its payments.

Will I need a letter from my trustee?

A lender may request documentation or confirmation from your Licensed Insolvency Trustee regarding your consumer proposal and payment status. The exact documentation required can depend on the lender and the individual application.
