2016 Toyota Corolla S — Heated Front Sport Bucket Seats, Back-Up Camera, Paddle Shifters, Cruise Control with Steering Wheel Controls

Fully inspected. Every vehicle gets a detailed mechanical and safety inspection before it's sold.

Most of what a car does is unglamorous, and this is a car that seems to understand that. The same drive across town, five days a week, in whatever the coast is doing that morning. The 1.8L four with VVT-i and the CVTi-S transmission are a pairing built for exactly that kind of week rather than for a spec sheet, and the 50-litre tank means the fuel stop tends to be something you fit in once rather than plan your week around. Inside, the driver's seat is six-way adjustable, the steering column tilts and telescopes, and there's a proper footrest, so you can set yourself up properly instead of putting up with wherever the seat happens to sit. Cruise control sits on the steering wheel where your thumb already is for the longer straight stretches, there's an outside temperature gauge for the small satisfaction of watching it drop in February, and cabin air filtration keeps things pleasant with four wet coats aboard. Delayed accessory power means the radio doesn't cut out the second you switch off, so the six speakers can finish the song while you find your keys.

It also turns out to be a good car for the week you're the one driving the carpool. Three people and their bags is well within what a Corolla does without complaint, and the HVAC system runs underseat ducts, so the warm air actually reaches the back rather than stopping somewhere around the windscreen. There's a rear cupholder, door bins front and rear, a seatback storage pocket and a covered bin in the instrument panel, which between them keep everyone's odds and ends off the floor. Heated front sport bucket seats look after the first ten minutes of a cold morning, and there are curtain airbags across the first and second rows, side impact beams in the doors, a driver knee airbag and rear child safety locks for whoever ends up in the back. Splash guards deal with what the gravel throws up on the way.

Then there's the Saturday in July when you drive up to Telegraph Cove just because the weather finally agreed to cooperate. It's a proper drive, and this is where the S trim's details stop being cosmetic: the sequential multi-mode shifter and paddle shifters let you hold a gear on the descents instead of riding the brakes, and the front and rear anti-roll bars, gas-pressurized shocks and strut front suspension make the winding sections more enjoyable than a sensible sedan strictly needs to be. Light tinted glass takes the edge off the afternoon sun, the covered floor console has a 12-volt outlet for the phone that's doing the navigating, and there's a front cupholder and a centre armrest with storage underneath it. Under the trunk floor there's a real compact spare mounted inside rather than a tire repair kit, which is the sort of thing you hope to never think about and are genuinely glad of on the one evening you do.

The rest of the time it quietly handles the errands, and a sedan has one advantage here that's easy to overlook. Whatever goes in the trunk is out of sight and locked away rather than on display through the glass, which makes leaving the car for an hour a lot less interesting a proposition. The key fob will open the trunk for you when your hands are full, there are mechanical releases for the cargo access and the fuel flap so two of the things you reach for most often aren't waiting on a battery, and the cargo space lights help once the afternoon has got away from you. If something turns out longer than the trunk allows, the 60/40 rear bench folds forward and the problem largely sorts itself out. Carpet front and rear floor mats and carpeted trunk trim take what comes in on your boots. Backing into a stall at the end of it, the back-up camera shows you what's behind and the day-night rearview mirror takes some of the glare out of a dark lot, while the auto on/off projector-beam LED headlamps come on as the light goes and stay lit briefly after you've walked away. Fog lights, variable intermittent wipers, heated power side mirrors and a rear window defroster round out the wet-weather equipment. If there's something on this list you'd like pinned down before you drive in, give us a call and we'll check it against the vehicle itself.

We'll be straight with you on warranty: a 2016 is well past the five-year, 100,000 km powertrain coverage Toyota originally provided, so there's no factory warranty left to fall back on, and the price is set with that in mind. You'll notice a generic "Balance of Factory Warranty" line in the equipment list on this page — the model year doesn't support it, so please disregard it. Extended warranty options are available if you'd like some protection going forward, and we're happy to talk through what's actually worth having rather than pointing you at the longest line on the sheet.

Pacific Nations has a 4.9-star Google rating from more than 1,400 customer reviews, which we'd rather keep earning than hurry anyone along. And if a tidy, economical sedan is close but not quite what you had in mind, say so — as part of the Steve Marshall Auto Group we have access to a larger network of dealerships and inventory, and we're glad to go looking on your behalf.
