Some jobs start before the town does, and for half the year that means leaving in the dark and coming back in it. This is a pleasant car to do that in. Heated front bucket seats and a heated leather steering wheel take the edge off before the cabin has caught up, the heated power side mirrors clear themselves without being asked, and the rear window defroster sorts the back glass so you aren't reversing out on faith. The projector beam headlamps switch themselves on and off as the light changes and stay lit for a moment after you've parked, so you're not walking away from a dark car or a lit one. There's an outside temperature gauge on the driver information centre to tell you what sort of morning you're dealing with, cruise control sits on the wheel where your thumb already is, and a perimeter alarm and immobilizer look after it while you're inside for the day. The six-way adjustable front seats with a height adjuster and the tilt and telescoping column mean you can get genuinely comfortable first rather than settling for wherever the seat happens to be.
Saturday it turns out to be the gear car, which is the part people don't expect from a sedan. The trunk is deeper than the shape suggests, there's a release on the key fob for when your arms are full and a mechanical release inside for the days the fob is at the bottom of a bag, and cargo space lights mean you're not loading by the light of your phone. Fold the 60/40 rear seatback forward and the long awkward thing comes home too. Whoever comes along gets rear cupholders and a seatback storage pocket for the items that otherwise migrate to the floor, there are two 12-volt outlets to keep everything charged, and manual air conditioning with cabin air filtration keeps the drive back civil. Both visors have illuminated vanity mirrors for the check nobody admits to doing.
Then there's the stretch of Island Highway where the lanes sort themselves out and somebody always turns up exactly where you can't see them. Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist can warn you when another vehicle is sitting alongside, and Rear Collision Warning adds another set of eyes behind you. The 2.0L four and the six-speed automatic are tuned for steadiness rather than theatrics, and when you'd rather choose the gear yourself — the long descent, the merge that needs a bit more — SHIFTRONIC manual mode and the driver-selectable drive mode are right there. The speed-sensing electric power steering stays light in town and firms up as you pick up pace, and a 53-litre tank in a car this size means the week's driving quietly stops being something you budget for.
Coming back into town after dark is the ordinary end of most of this. The back-up camera does the looking when you reverse out of an angled stall, the 205/55R16 all-seasons on 16-inch alloys have a sidewall that takes a pothole without drama, and there's a proper compact spare mounted inside under the trunk floor rather than a repair kit — worth a surprising amount on the one evening you need it. Rear child safety locks mean the back doors stay shut until you decide otherwise, and there are curtain airbags across the first and second rows plus a driver knee airbag up front.
On warranty we'll be straight with you: a 2019 is past Hyundai's five-year powertrain coverage, and the price is set with that in mind. The listing page carries a generic "Balance of Factory Warranty" flag that the years don't support here, so please disregard it. Extended warranty options are available if you'd like some protection going forward, and we'll give you an honest read on what's actually worth having.
The 4.9-star Google rating from more than 1,400 customer reviews is the part of this job we're happiest about, and we'd rather earn the next one than rush anybody. If getting to Campbell River is the hard part, we deliver throughout BC.
